The Origin of Coaching

In the 1500’s, the word coach described a horse-drawn vehicle that would get people from where they were to where they wanted to be. Many years later, big buses with rows of seats were also called coaches, and their purpose was the same: to get the people to where they wanted to go.

The goal was similar in the ancient athletic world, where coaches helped gifted athletes and teams boost their performance and get to the goal of winning in the Olympic Games. Whatever its origins, the word stuck and coaches became known as people who help athletes move from one place to another. Over time, the word also became associated with musicians, public speakers, and actors who rely on coaches to improve their skills, overcome obstacles, remain focused, and get to where they want to be.

How Coaching Has Evolved

Today, coaching is simply the process of moving someone from where they are to where they want to be. Coaching helps people expand their visions, build their confidence, unlock their potential, increase their skills, and take practical steps towards their goals. Coaching encourages, challenges, and motivates you to clarify your own life direction and commitment to move forward to the place you desire to be.

Why Life Coaching is the Solution & What Life Coaching is Not

People come for life coaching because they want something to be different. The issue may be as simple as reworking an article or as complex as remolding a life, but all coaching is about making changes. Coaches and the people they coach know that for the future to be different, we need to change the way we do things in the present. More often, changes involve shifts in attitudes, thinking, perceptions, and behavior.

What Life Coaching is Not
  • Counseling or Therapy – deals mostly with a person’s past and trauma to seek healing.
  • Consulting – deals with problems and seeks to provide information, expertise, advice, strategies, and methodologies to solve them.
  • Mentoring – deals mostly with succession training and seeks to help someone do what the mentor does.

What Happens in Life Coaching

Coaching is a relationship that is client centered and goal directed. Every coaching situation is unique, but I will usually begin by exploring the issues you want to change. In what areas do you wish to grow? You may want to be a better leader, better self-manager, or have a clearer perspective about how you want your future to look.

There is also the need for better awareness of where you presently are. What are your strengths, weaknesses, abilities, interests, passions, innate gifts, values, worldviews, and hopes? I will use assessment tools to enable you to learn more about yourself.

At other times, I will help you set goals and plan ways to reach those goals. When obstacles get in the way, I challenge, encourage, and give accountability so you can get past the obstacles and experience success. I help you remove the blinders, allowing you to see what you may not recognize and give support as you move forward. I am here for you; to listen to your concerns and ask questions that will give you clarity on your situation, help you get past personal roadblocks, realize your innate potential, and challenge you to be the best version of YOU that you can.

How Are Sessions Conducted?

All coaching session are conducted via phone (or virtual calls).

There are several reasons why this is the preferred method:

  1. Clients who are coached over the phone find that sessions are more relaxing & enjoyable because of minimal distractions and more control over your environment.
  2. Phone coaching increases your privacy, heightens comfort level, and allows you to open up more freely.
  3. Convenience & Flexibility – You can be coached anytime, anywhere, from any country, state, or city you live in.
